Global were contracted to work at Rio’s Nummaldi iron ore pit in 2008/2009 to mine previously abandoned DSO, which had been difficult to recover due to an underlying waste profile. The pit was subject to dewatering, and a Wirtgen 2500 surface miner was used to create a flitch plan that incorporated a perimeter moat and a 3% cross-fall slope, so that water drained to a permanent sump.
This design allowed full access to the pit at all times, and access to the additional resource. The Wirtgen 2500 achieved productivity levels of up to 900t per hour and the resource was recovered at a very low cost.
